CELEBRATION TIME

Celebration time has arrived. Many of you have broken into new territories which is very exciting for your future - challenges have already been set. Friday of this week is of course the private view but you wil need to be in on Thursday to remove your folders and anything else which isn't for public consumption. As you will have gathered it wil not be possible to produce the planed newspaper. Not enough enthusiasm for the extra work in general which is understandable. It's been a very rewarding teaching year for me. As I've said all along you have been ahead of the game for much of the year. I've had some really enlightening conversations will all of you and trust you too have had a rewarding year.

Last opportunity to refine thoughts on presentation and assessment criteria.

We have reached a very critical phase of the FMP. Its the time when you need to ensure that the "story so far" is evidenced by your supporting research and development activity. This should exist in your journal, sketchbook, material sampling and, where appropriate, blog entries. For those who may not appreciate what the blog could be have a look at Izzie's page on this blog. Others have also made good but different us of the blog - links to Youtube videos for example - but I think its fair to say that Izzie has made more consistent use of the blog than most. A recent comment left for her is as follows:

well its all going well. My last comment -You now need to refine the materials and quality of making - has certainly been taken to task. You have discovered a refined method of production which fully subscribes to your stated aim "I hope to create a piece of furniture that will reflect a mentally ill person’s state of mind". It is consistency, working with clear criteria, which has guided the work to date. We now have to consider the most critical phase - presentation. We have discussed a number of reasons why the work should not be fixed to the floor - all valued and considered - but know we have to make sure these reasons are communicated. Give it some thought prior to our next discussion.

The SOI's presented have been discussed with staff and some very interesting and diverse work is planned by students. Its early days but sketch book, reflective diary and journal work should be well on its way.

Archie Burney

Paper cut project- this was focused on the achievement of happiness. Above shows the Chinese writing for the word happiness (double happiness).  the image on the right shows the other side of the item it has, the five commandments show you how to become happy are erected and spiral in to the centre so you have to spin the item to read it. the five commandments are: capacity to love and to be love, gratitude, curiosity, hope and zest for life.
